Four tips for a smarter hiring process.

Typical rules for screening job candidates aren't cutting it, says Fast Company.

Here's how to better your hiring practices:

1. Get around bias. Hide candidates' names and addresses before reviewing résumés to cut down on the hidden bias of those doing the early screening.

2. Go beyond buzzwords. Scanning résumés for buzzwords alone is a bad approach, especially if you don't understand what the buzzwords really mean.

3. Accept different backgrounds. If everyone on your team has the same experiences, you'll miss out on creative ways of working and problem-solving.

4. Think beyond immediate needs. Hire the person who can adapt and remain effective as your business needs change. Don't just hire to solve a pressing problem.
