CUs Benefit From Improving Economy

Falling unemployment rate is a key factor, says CUNA economist.

U.S. economic fundamentals are solid, says Perc Pineda, CUNA's senior economist, in the most recent CUNA Economic Update.

Pineda points to August's unemployment rate of 5.1%, which the Federal Reserve Bank considers "full employment."

Positive indicators for the U.S. economy, he says, include:

These indicators point to continued improvement for credit unions in auto and home loans.

Based on CUNA and NCUA data, Pineda says, credit unions benefit from the improving economic landscape in three areas:

1. Memberships;

2. Assets, savings, and loan growth; and

3. Management of credit and interest rate risk.
