But turning clicks to sales remains a challenge for most merchants.
Expect mobile commerce transactions to reach $142 billion in 2016, eclipsing the $115 billion projected for this year, according to a Forrester Research report.
The report, "U.S. Mobile Phone and Tablet Commerce Forecast, 2015 to 2020," outlines the ongoing challenge of converting "clicks to sales."
Nearly one-third of retailers' Web traffic comes from mobile phones, but those interactions result in only 11% of overall sales.
A few major merchants lead the way in mobile commerce. Amazon and eBay capture roughly one-third of all mobile shopping in the U.S., according to Forrester estimates.
Mobile commerce currently accounts for 35% of overall e-commerce and will increase to 49% of sales—a $252 billion share—by 2020, says Forrester.
Mobile device adoption continues to accelerate. Forrester projects a 17% compound annual growth rate across smartphones and tablets in the next five years.
