Career courage

Rich Jones wishes he could give his 25-year-old self some advice.

From working in the dot-com arena to serving as a credit union executive and a financial services consultant, Rich Jones has experienced a varied career.

He's had to reinvent himself several times over, and has learned hard lessons along the way, he tells the CUNA News Podcast. If he could go back and give his younger self some advice, he'd offer these tips:

Always re-evaluate. "Ask am I finding true satisfaction in what I'm doing? Am I achieving my personal life goals?" he says. "I would coach myself to have the courage to step away and do something that drives me forward with passion, enthusiasm, and excitement."

Trust more. "I remember my first management job," he says. "I thought I had to have all the answers, that I had to know how to do everything perfectly, because obviously they trusted me to be the manager. No, you learn how to trust your people to do the right thing."
